Ever wonder what’s the most important part of your follow-up email? It’s the subject line, of course! The subject line is your one chance to grab your readers before they hit the “delete” key. If they don’t pick your subject line out of their ever-expanding list of emails to be read, forget it. Your message will be deleted.
Here are the five worst follow-up email subject lines, and how to fix them:
1. “Learn to Write an Engaging Follow-Up Email and Find Out the Best Social Media and While You’re at it Here is the Best Restaurant in Town…” Avoid a subject line that goes on and on and doesn’t get to the point. Long headlines for web pages or sales letters are fine, but they don’t translate well to email. Your email subject line should be short and to the point. Can you say what you need to say in about five to seven words? If not, keep working until you can. In the above example, simply use “Learn to Write an Engaging Follow-Up Email.”
2. “Read this.” Don’t have a boring subject line. Your subject line needs to grab your reader’s attention and arouse their curiosity with something newsworthy and exciting. A question is a good way to jazz things up. Here’s an example: “How Can this Email Make You a Millionaire?”
3. “Latest Recommendations for You.” Don’t ignore SEO. Your email subject lines need to include keywords that are relevant to your follow-up email. Keywords are not only helpful to Google, but also to your customers. (Where do you think those keywords came from?) Use SEO in your subject lines, like, “Latest Email Follow-Up Techniques for You.”
4. “Tips on Email Follow-Up.” Boring words are, well, boring. Add some words that are worthy of attention, such as, “Little Known Secrets to Email Follow-Up.”
5. “You Had to Be There, But…” When you write a subject line that needs further explanation, you risk losing your reader. If your subject line is confusing, your readers often won’t bother to open the email to get an explanation. Your subject line needs to be able to stand alone. For instance, “What the Brady Bunch Can Teach You About Follow-Up Emails.”
Your subject line is the most important part of your follow-up email. By using these tips, you will create subject lines that will capture your readers’ interest… and get them to open your follow-up emails.
