How to Use Google More EffectivelyOctober 27, 2015
Google has become such a part of our culture that it’s no longer just the name of a search engine. It’s something we “do” when we have a question that needs to be answered.
Even though most Internet users know how to type a simple phrase in Google, not everyone knows how to be a true genius at searching. Here are a few simple, yet effective ways to get the best results from a Google search.
Quotation Marks – Adding quotation marks around a word or phrase allows you to search for an exact match to your query. This is especially useful when you’re searching for quotes and song lyrics.
Dashes – Putting a dash before a word you want to exclude in your search is a good way to hone in on the exact results you want. For instance, if you’re interested in the Jaguar automobile, rather than the animal, your search field would look like this: jaguar –animal
Site:Query – This type of search enables you to get results from certain websites or domains. For instance, if you want to find an article in the New York Times, your query would look like this: site:nytimes.com
Link:Query – This search operator helps you search for web pages that link to a specific website. For example: link:youtube.com
Two Periods – Separating numbers by two periods without spaces will allow you to see results that contain numbers in a range of things like date, measurements and prices. For example: movies 1950..1970
Related:Query – Use this search operator to find websites that are related to a web address you already know. If you wanted to know what other news organizations are related to Time magazine, for example, you would use this query: related:time.com.
Be advised that when you search using operators or punctuation marks, you should not add any spaces between the operator and the search term. For instance, a search for site:money.com will work, but site: money.com won’t.
