Are You Making These Common SEO Mistakes?November 4, 2011

Getting your website to the first page of Google and keeping it there is an ongoing process that involves many different factors such as including keywords in meta tags, generating back links, etc. The trouble is, some new website owners don’t understand the fundamentals of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and some older websites were never properly optimized to begin with.
Here are a few common SEO mistakes to avoid:
1. Not using your customer’s language
Don’t get caught up in industry-speak when writing copy for your website. Your customers probably don’t know the terms you take for granted and use every day. Use their language instead.
2. Optimizing for common, popular words
Sometimes websites focus their pages around common, popular keywords. The trouble here is that one-word phrases are often the most searched, so you’ll be competing with millions of websites. A better strategy is to focus on what are called “long-tail keywords” – two, three and four word phrases. You’ll have fewer websites to compete with for these phrases, and a better chance that your prospects will be able to find your site on page one of Google.
3. Keyword stuffing
Once you select keywords for your site, don’t overuse them on a single web page! This is called “keyword stuffing” and not only will it turn off your readers, but the search engines frown on this practice and could prevent your site from showing up at all.
4. Building your site with flash
Flash is a type of software that allows websites to display animations. It can produce some beautiful effects, but any content within flash can’t be read by the search engine “spiders.” To get around this “invisible shield,” limit the use of flash to just one page of your site.
5. Not using analytics
If your website is designed to generate leads for your business, don’t you want to know what keywords are driving people to your site? Or how long people are staying on your site? The way to learn this information is through analytics. Google Analytics is a free tool that can be installed on your website. It gives you insights into your website traffic so you can write strengthen your marketing initiatives and create a higher converting website.
